Set the Expectations for Employee Monitoring
- Expect resentment
- Any new idea or change is bothersome
- Some employees will never accept it or be willing
to abide by the policy
- Empathize with them and put yourself in their
shoes
- Employees expect a certain amount of privacy
- Use Discretion -
Like micro-managing, zero-tolerance is short-sighed
as well. Create an easy system of discipline such as:
First violation involves a warning, second a reprimand...
Make the Employee Monitoring system easy for the HR and
other authorized personnel. Remember, monitoring should
not get in the way of productivity.
If worst comes to worse then you should have to call
in law enforcement. Again, call in law enforcement ASAP.
Make sure you keep all logs. If you must reboot the computer
or otherwise touch the machine(s) keep a log of everything
you do.
- Involve ALL Departments -
- Legal Department
- Human Resource
- IT Department
- Executives
- Utilize or Form a Security Policy Committee -
Not IT's main responsibility!
Monitoring software is not only a IT job! IT departments
have more than enough on their plates to handle this alone.
One of the greatest advantages of Employee Monitoring
is that it can be installed by anyone and can be working
immediately with reports that will impress everyone.
- LEAD BY EXAMPLE -
GOLDEN RULE: Establish and build trust in order
to keep employees in the know.
